for a more readable version of my w&p classpects (on tumblr), click here!
let me just start by saying that War and Peace as a whole is a very doomish piece of literature
im not going to go and classpect The Leo Tolstoy
but if i did he would be a doom player
it's all over his philosophy about the world!
no one can look me in the eye and tell me The Mr. No Free Will We Are Condemned By Our Natures is not a doom player
also fun fact i read w&p for a college course and did my midterm presentation on my classpects for the Big Three and my now-retired-he's-so-old prof LOVED it. suck on that liberals
ok now back to the task at hand: character classpects! click on the character youd like to see to jump to their section
click on the message box at the bottom to return to the top
yes you saw that right i classpected napoleon DEAL WITH IT

PB: Pierre Bezukhov is the Page of Light.
PB: Light is the aspect of relevancy, knowledge, and luck.
PB: He serves relevancy or through relevancy with the self as the end goal.
PB: In other words, his journey revolves around seeking The Truth™ and constantly coming up against self-imposed obstacles before reaching it.
PB: Once he reaches his fullest potential, he becomes the most powerful user of his aspect.
PB: He spends the vast majority of the text jumping between epiphanies, believing he has found The Truth™ only to fall back into despair when it doesn't work out for him.
PB: Pages are known for their "slowburn" development, which Pierre exhibits well.
PB: However, they also are extremely adept at subtle manipulation to get what they want.
PB: It is very easy for Pierre to get whatever he thinks he wants in the early portions of the novel. He inherits his father's ludicrous fortune, marries the most beautiful woman in Russia, gets to "help the peasants", and remains (somewhat) healthy when living his excessive lifestyle.
PB: But none of this is what Pierre really wants. He wants to know The Truth™. That's what keeps him up at night, what drives him forward and what leads him to this incorrect conclusions.
PB: Similarly, Pages are also known for misusing their aspect. Pierre is notoriously in the background during his marriage to Helene. He is reduced to someone who is irrelevant, unknown, and unnoticable.
PB: Pierre also misuses other parts of his aspect. All of his hasty conclusions aside, he has explicitly believed himself to have "cracked the code" of the number of the beast with Napoleon, which was just completely ridiculous.
PB: This misuse of his aspect, however, doesn't last forever. By the epilogues (and arguably before then), Pierre is a very well-refined and intelligent gentleman who is able to present himself completely differently from before.
PB: Through the help of Platon (who i believe to be a seer of void), Pierre arrives at his final conclusion – his full potential – which allows him to be someone who is respected, relevant, and knowledgeable.
now i really like pierre hes my favorite w&p character
which is why i really want to get his classpect right
i think i went through like five different classpects for him before settling on Page of Light, but horrible terrible news
i'm still not 100% sure
funnily enough i'm tetering between Page of Light and Page of Void, which happen to be opposite aspects
you may wonder how it could be possible for me to be confused when the aspects are completely opposite
well dear reader! the nature of the light void dichotomy is heavily weighted in relevance
where light is relevance, void is irrelevance
the nature of pages is being bad at their aspect at first before coming into superior understanding of it later on
pierre could be either because you can read his character either as finding and appreciating The Truth™ after a long and arduous mental journey
ORR you can see him as someone finally coming to terms with the fact that there is no Truth™
its difficult for me to come to a clear conclusion because i feel as though its mostly just semantics
it doesnt help that i dont know a bunch about the void aspect in general, which is probably why im biased towards light for him
in the grand scheme of things, it doesnt matter all that much! so im just coasting :3

AB: Andrey Bolkonsky is the Thief of Time.
AB: Time is the aspect of action, destinations, and endings.
AB: He steals action or through action with the self as the end goal.
if that sentence makes no sense to you dont worry the sparknotes of classpecting rarely does.... but for the sake of consistency it shall remain...
AB: In other words, his journey focuses around constantly moving forward to progress himself, existing in a state of non-stop movement and flux to get to the next destination which will hopefully allow for further self-improvement.

MB: Marya Bolkonsky is the Heir of Blood.
MB: Blood is the aspect of duty, obligations, and relationships
MB: She manipulates duty or through duty with others as the end goal.
MB: In other words, her journey revolves around embodying the duty of her bloodline and her role within her family, almost being pulled along for the ride at the whims of obligations placed upon her (sometimes needlessly by herself).
-- adamantClasspecter [AC] ceased pestering maryaBolkonsky [MB] at 06:12 --
-- adamantClasspecter [AC] began pestering princeBolkonsky [PB] at 04:13 --
PB: Prince Bolkonsky is the Knight of Rage.
a pretty shitty one, but one nonetheless!
PB: Rage is the aspect of skepticism, strength, and harsh reality
PB: He serves skepticism or through skepticsm with others as the end goal.
seasoned classpecters might raise their eyebrows at me assigning a passive class to the old prince - especially The Self Sacrifice class... but like.. hear me out
PB: In other words, his journey revolves around trying to help others through what he believes to be the best way: the cold, harsh, cruel truth.
PB: The Prince is known for his cruelty. He is selfish and abusive to Marya throughout her whole life, yet somehow cannot bear to lose her.
again anyone with their toes dipped into classpect would be confused at this assignment
just wait: i'm cooking!!!
i promise.... bear... bear with me please
so the prince is Evil and Mean, right? I dont entirely think this stops him from being a knight
knights are all about self-sacrifice, right?
this doesnt always look like dave (or davesprite for that matter... ough thinking about davesprite.. i mustnt get distracted) and can instead look like... well..
the old prince!
im not going to sit here and tell you hes a good knight, in fact i think he's a pretty piss poor one
but that doesnt change the fact that he thinks he's protecting his daughter, the one person he loves the most in the world
whether you actually believe in that love is up to you, but we do know that the old prince believes in it
he tries to protect her the only way he knows how: the weapon and tool he is most comfortable with: rage
while rage is typically associated with anger and well, rage, it's not only that
i (and the extended zodiac hehe) believe rage to be more about the cold hard truth: the harsh reality nobody (especially not hope players) want to hear
it is the opposite of hope, which is all about fantasy and utopia
PB: The Old Prince spends his waking days working hard and never taking breaks, even when he is excessively burnt out.
PB: Knights tend to self-depricate, sometimes dipping into self-punishment territory. The Prince, while selfish, doesn't seem very fond of himself.
PB: He has a solid grasp on his values and lifestyle, but that's just because that's the cold hard truth that people must accept. It's his tool, his weapon, that he uses to face the world.
PB: The other part of the Knight's repertoire is their sheild, their foolproof plan to keep themselves from getting hurt.
PB: Knights are masters at falling behind their aspect to sheild their true feelings and emotions about things, and the Prince is no exception.
PB: Despite feeling that Marya is what is most important to him, he feels as though he cannot express it, so instead he expresses what he knows: rage.
He has outbursts of anger and cruelty when he feels backed into a corner, another common trait among Knights. When all is lost, burn the bridges, then come crawling back once the embers have cooled.
still not convinced?
ok well i'll let you in on a secret
neither am i LMAO LOLOLOL
to be honest, i havent fully settled on a classpect for the prince. Knight of Rage is just the closest I got
in the beginning i wanted sooo bad for him to be a prince so i could go "haha! look! the prince is a prince!!"
to be honest, there might be some value there because if he is a knight, he is a incredibly dysfunctional one
but, hey, if i ever reread w&p when im still into classpecting maybe i'll take another look at him
or maybe you, reader who fills the incredibly small niche of homestuck and war and peace enjoyer, have different opinions
either way i get to drag the prince through the mud since hes a knight and im a knight we're like twins

-- adamantClasspecter [AC] began pestering natashaRostov [NR] at 04:13 --
NR: Natasha Rostov is the Maid of Hope.
NR: Hope is the aspect of faith, utopia, and innocence
NR: She creates faith or through faith with the self as the end goal.
NR: In other words, her journey revolves around moving through life as though she is the main character, finding saccharine fantasy enveloping and exhuding from her until she realizes she just can't take it anymore.
my favorite thing about maids is that you can say the fun little pun!
maids are literally "made" of their aspect!
since natasha is the maid of hope, she is literally made of hope
you can see it in every interaction she has with people in the book, espeically andrey when they have their little thing
when i did my project for my course i was BRIMMING with textual evidence for natasha's effect on people, how she was a symbol and figurehead for youth, joy... for hope.
i originally thought she could be life because of her contagious sense of youthfulnesss
but my good good friend and much better classpecter reminded me of hope and its strong relationship with youthfulness, most notably in the naive/innocent manner
i think it's fair to say that natasha, for most of the book, is pretty naive
she believes the world is sugarcoated and caters specifically to her
when things come tumbling down around her majorly for arguably the first time in her life with anatole, she doesn't know how to handle the reality of the situation
to hope users, the world can be perfect, other people just dont see it!
i love natasha, so much. i dont think its a surprise that she ended up being a player of my favorite aspect!!!

-- adamantClasspecter [AC] began pestering nikolayRostov [NR] at 04:13 --
NR: Nikolay Rostov is a Hope player.
to be soo honest i have very little clue on what his class could be but boy oh boy is this lad a hope player
most of the rostovs, the only exception being the countess i believe, are hope players
its just in their blood!! lolol
but yeah nikolay is a hope player, he has that special sauce about him
my notes say hes a rogue of hope but i have no clue where i got that from, since thats where my notes on him end....
i thought i had him down as heir of hope which i think makes more sense, buuuut i guess not? who knows
-- adamantClasspecter [AC] ceased pestering nikolayRostov [NR] at 06:12 --
-- adamantClasspecter [AC] began pestering mikhailKutuzhov [MK] at 04:13 --
MK: Mikhail Kutuzhov is the Muse of Heart.
MK: Heart is the aspect of identity, the self, and emotions
MK: He controls identity or through identity with others as the end goal.
MB: In other words, his role in the story is to inspire others to act through identity and feeling as opposed to logic and strategy.
let me just get something clear that im classpecting the character kutuzhov and not like. the actual guy he was based off of
that was probably obvious but like just in case
kutuzhov's classpect is best understood when paired with napoleon
its clear that in the story napoleon and kutuzhov are foils of each other
which is exceptionally silly to me because they have opposite classpects!
where kutuzhov is the muse of heart
napoleon is the lord of mind
where napoleon uses strategy and smarts, kutuzhov takes advantace of the russian identity and the secret force that moves the army
i'll get more into napoleon in his section later on, so lets focus on kutuzhov
MK: Kutuzhov's most notable impact is his insistance that the Russians won the battle of Borodino.
MK: To him, the battle was won due to the heart of the fight. While they lost more men, they exhibited true Russian nationalism and connectedness
MK: His style of leading the armies of Russia was much different than Napoleon leading the French.
MK: He didn't give out detailed instructions or meticulous plans, he approved or vetoed plans from others.
in other words he went based on vibes
MK: His main focus and style of leadership was passive inspiration, letting others take the lead and acting more as a figurehead or symbol of the united Russian military than as a head strategist.
now its been a while since i read w&p and kutuzhov isnt super discussed in my notes
but i do know for a fact that this classpect is pretty airtight
youre just going to have to take my word for it tho lolol
again i think his classpect makes more sense when compared to napoleon, who i have to get to below
-- adamantClasspecter [AC] ceased pestering mikhailKutuzhov [MK] at 06:12 --
-- adamantClasspecter [AC] began pestering napoleonBonaparte [NB] at 04:13 --
NB: Napoleon Bonaparte is the Lord of Mind.
NB: Mind is the aspect of logic, order, and systems
NB: He controls logic or through logic with the self as the end goal.
MB: In other words, his role in the story is to believe he is in control, using his mind and strategies to move pawns around the chessboard, taking credit for everything that comes to pass as his own doing. He plays god, using his own superb mind as evidence that it is a role he deserves to play.
i never thought when i started homestuck that one day i would be classpecting the napoleon ... but here we are
again im not actually classpecting the real guy, just the one who appears in w&p
NB: Napoleon is a character that Tolstoy liked to poke a lot of fun at.
NB: He is a character whose mindset goes against all of Tolstoy's core philosophies surrounding freewill and the power of a single man.
NB: His entire character is ridiculed through his actions, where we see Tolstoy's philosophies peeking through.
NB: Napoleon believes himself to be in control of everything regarding the military. He believes himself to be completely unstoppable and unfathomably wise in his field.
NB: However, the readers see that even though he gives out constant directions and carefully thought out instructions, never are the outcomes exactly as intended.
NB: Despite this, Napoleon is still at the top. He is still unquestionably in a position of power.
NB: This is where the Lord comes into play. Not only does he have the power, he knows he has it and believes he deserves to have it.
NB: His identity focuses around the idea that his destiny is to be the center of the world. He wants to conquer Europe and crowns himself Emperor.
NB: His military strategy focuses almost entirely on him giving out orders (even if they aren't quite followed properly) and being the head of command.
NB: He believes military strategy is what wins battles, since that is the tool he uses. He controls the strategy, he controls the outcomes, he is the Lord of Mind.
NB: That is, at least, how he sees it.
NB: In the world of classpecting, that's all that's necessary. It's not always how things actually are, but instead how the player sees things.
NB: Napoleon sees himself as the center of the universe, weilding his mind as a peerless blade to all who confronts him.
hopefully kutuzhov's classpect is a little more clear now that we've covered napoleon
napoleon's military strategy is Military Strategy
while kutuzhov's is more.. uh.. vibes based
napoleon believes himself to be the center of the universe while kutuzhov recognizes what little power he has over the outcomes of the situation, instead turning to control what he can
his version of control is much less obvious than napoleon's
but kutuzhov did control his armies, just much differently
his strategies allowed the armies to continue fighting, to keep pushing to stay holding onto their drive, the heart of the army
my notes have more to say but i feel like im just being redundant at this point
read the book and youll agree with me i know it because im 100% right about these two <3 thanks
-- adamantClasspecter [AC] ceased pestering napoleonBonaparte [NB] at 06:12 --
well those are my thoughts on the classpects of some of the w&p characters!
at least the ones in my notes
im fairly certain ive thought about some of the others, like helene being witch and anatole being a theif
but anatole being a thief is pretty obvious lmao
i might come back at a later date to add more characters, but now im going to just focus on making sure the characters i do have are written to my satisfaction!
if you do end up reading this, thanks for listening to my rambles!! its honestly great fun to think about, especially with characters who are so Character like in w&p
its such a fun excersize for books i read for courses, and im excited to do more of it as i finish up my college years!!!
